Campus Jobs

In the first school year (2 semesters), work on the school campus 20 hours a week. You can work in the United States in the summer and in non-school periods, full time, but keep these requirements in mind when looking for a job:

– Only those with an F-1 or J-1 visa can work on campus.

– US nationals or residents applying for the same job have priority.

– The job you are looking for must provide a direct service to students. For example, in the library or the cafeteria.

– Entities affiliated with your school can hire you even if the location is off your campus. In a laboratory, for example.

Curricular Internship Period (CPT)

This is a program approved by the USCIS for students with an F-1 visa. They are mandatory internships linked to the student's study plan. Thus, for example, if you are a medical student, you must have training in the field of health.

With the CPT you can do a job of up to 20 hours a week during the academic period that lasts one year. Please note that if you complete more than one year of CPT, you will no longer be eligible for OPT upon completion of your training. On the other hand, to be authorized, it is necessary to submit a CPT application accompanied by the job offer related to the studies.

Important! You must verify that the practices are authorized by the DSO.

Optional practices (OPT)

The OPT, or Optional Practical Training, consists of a training that allows you to train in a field related to your studies. The training lasts 12 months and can be taken before the end of the study (pre-completion) or after (“post-completion”).

The DSO shall recommend to the student the most appropriate PTO for his/her need using the I-20 form. Those wishing to undertake pre-practice training should:

  1. Follow the registration procedures established by the school.
  1. Have the assigned school official review the application, determine eligibility, and complete the I-20 form on the Student and Exchange Visitor System website.
  1. Sign Form I-20 and fill out Form I-765.
  1. If approved, wait for Citizenship and Immigration Services to give you an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
  1. Receive the authorization and carry out the work on the indicated date.

Optional internships (OPT) for students of STEM careers

If you have a degree in one of these areas, you can extend your OPT (post completion) for up to 24 months. You just need to be a graduate in one of the major majors listed in the designated STEM degrees, have a job with an E-Verify registered employer, and have an initial OPT job assignment.

These careers have to do with the fields of:
